The origins of Contemporary Dance Method
Contemporary Dance Method is the brainchild of Sarah Hirsch, a dynamic and multicultural dancer based in London. Sarah first began dancing in her teens and found it be a powerful way in which to communicate her emotions during a challenging period in her life. Dance quickly became her primary means of expression and provided her with a safe and welcoming environment which eventually allowed her to grow both professionally and personally. The concept was born from these past experiences and the desire to create an environment in which to allow people to let go of their worries and their fears, while learning dance techniques and a new art form.
Our ethosIn an frenetic city such as London and in our busy day to day lives we often lose ourselves in robotic and routine movements. We forget to move and think outside the box and we never have time to stop and truly listen to the music.
As people, most of our movements are choreographed by routine and habit. Contemporary Dance Method is about feeling comfortable moving in new ways and getting back in touch with basics - as children we spend much more time closer to the ground, building our muscles and learning how to crawl, stand and move transversally. These are all things from which we quite literally distance ourselves as we grow. However, society also plays a role in determining what plane we move on. Using the ground to walk on is much more socially acceptable than using it to sit, roll or flip upon and yet that is exactly how we first learned to move. Contemporary Dance Method is a throwback to basic instinctive movements, taken to the next level - it is where we learn to control the uncontrollable. |
Our mission
Fundamentally we all strive for balance and happiness. When we go to a fitness or movement class, our main objective is to leave feeling healthy and energised. We all know the endorphin rush one gets after a good workout, but it often comes at the cost of having to endure uncomfortable environments and feeling intimidated by people surrounding us who seem to be more at ease and in better shape. With Contemporary Dance Method, Sarah strives to eliminate intimidation and judgment. There is only positive interaction, collaboration, self-expression, and learning from each other while toning and strengthening our bodies.
What clients say about Sarah
Student spotlight: Ayaki Lai
Ayaki Lai, aged 18, was born in Japan and raised in Hong Kong. She started dancing at age six locally before moving to the United States at 17 to attend ballet school. Seeking a teacher who could help raise her technical capabilities and gain admission to a top dance school on a full-time basis, Ayaki started online lessons with Sarah in 2020 and has been taking her classes ever since. This September, Ayaki will be starting at the prestigious Rambert school for ballet and contemporary dance in London. |
